The term “nerdgasm” has never been quite so on-the-money. Toronto’s burlesque event series Underground Peepshow has been building their reputation as purveyors of some of the most interesting performances to grace Toronto’s stages.. They specialize in nerd-themed burlesque shows: an Underground Peepshow showcase goes past “Slave Leia” and into some truly creative erotic performances. Past shows have been centered around Marvel comics and “The Evil League of Sexy”: a gender-bending Hannibal Lecter shared the stage with a glam Freddy Krueger and a ferociously sexy Cruella DeVille.
On March 10, Underground Peepshow will unveil their newest burlesque show, a tribute to what they dub “one of the most influential shows of our geeky generation”: The Simpsons. Expect sexy takes on classic characters – Marge has already received the Playboy treatment, but over a dozen performers will show off their sexy interpretations of the classic animated show – I’m hoping for a Selma and Patty-inspired performance, myself. I’m also looking forward to what are quickly becoming hallmarks of Underground Peepshow performances: elaborate costumes, and fearlessly tarting up and playing homage to some of nerd culture’s least obvious characters. Get ready to look at Groundskeeper Willy or Edna Krabappel in a whole new light.
Some of these performers were onstage at the Erotic Arts and Crafts Fair in February, some are burlesque veterans, and some are brand new to the scene – Underground Peepshow encourages newbies to join the shows – and while there’s a variety of skill and experience in the acts, they all bring enthusiastic energy to their performances. I’m especially excited for Dr. Tease and Betty Quirk, both of whom give a challenging, snappy intelligence to their burlesque. If you’re looking for birthday suits, look elsewhere – pasties and panties are both required of performers. The titillation factor comes from the striptease and the performance, not the full-frontal exposure.
We Put The Spring In Springfield will feature a performance by Pavlov’s Dogs, a local handbell group, along with a raffle and trivia contest. Prizes from Silver Snail, Eyesore Cinema, Magic Pony, Condom Shack, If You Fall Photography, Betty Monroe Designs, Borderline Plus, and The Keyhole Sessions (an erotic life-drawing evening) are up for grabs. This should be a fun, lighthearted night out for anyone who likes The Simpsons and erotic performance – and really, isn’t that most of us?
