While there are plenty of Japanese restaurants in Toronto, there is one particular restaurant that always comes to mind when I’m in the heart of downtown: Tokyo Grill (582 Yonge St.).  Whether we’re talking about the wide array of delicious Japanese comfort food, colourful and cozy atmosphere or friendly service, there’s something so lovely about this restaurant.

Tokyo Grill is by no means fine dining, but it does offer plenty of authentic Japanese comfort foods to whet your appetite.  This restaurant offers plenty of satisfying meals like Chicken Katsu Curry, Sukiyaki, Oyakudon, Beef Ramen, Tofu Steak and Unagidon, all of which come with a side of rice, miso soup and salad.  Of course, some of these meals will depend upon your personal taste, but each are nourishing and flavourful in their own right.  The same can be said about the miso with its light broth mixed with scallions and tofu, as well as the filling rice and refreshing salad which offers just enough balance to the meal.

That said, Tokyo Grill also offers plenty of tasty appetizers as well.  From Gyoza to Edamame, there’s lots of classic appetizers to choose from.  Be warned though, those meals can be very filling so don’t overdo it!

If that weren’t enough, this restaurant offers low, reasonable prices.  It’s a little surprising how little the owners charge for their meals considering how hearty and filling they can be.  Sometimes, it can be a real steal and a quick money-saver if you’re looking for a place that’s good quality.  From what I’ve noticed cruising Toronto, the  least expensive “hole-in-the-walls” sometimes offer the best authentic foods.  Go figure!

At first, Tokyo Grill might seem very tiny with little to no dining space; however, visit the back of the restaurant and you’ll find ample room for big groups.  Mind you, this restaurant is still cozy, but never stuffy — it offers just enough space and is as inviting as ever with its bright yellow and pink interior.   Tokyo Grill has plenty of character no matter what time of year you visit.

While Tokyo Grill might not seem so at first, it’s very much a hidden gem.  In a city bustling with energy, it’s easy to miss; but sometimes, those are the places worth checking out most.  There’s nothing better than stopping by on a hot and humid summer afternoon or a cold and windy winter evening. In fact, you’ll feel completely at home.
